Decimals

Numbers with a decimal point โ€” tenths and hundredths.

A decimal point separates whole numbers from parts. 0.5 means half. 1.25 means 1 and a quarter.

Decimals extend place value below the ones place. The first digit after the point is tenths, the next is hundredths. 0.25 = 2 tenths and 5 hundredths.

Decimal notation is base-10 place value extended to negative powers: 0.25 = 2ร—10โปยน + 5ร—10โปยฒ. Decimals and fractions are two representations of the same rational values.
