Fractions

Parts of a whole โ€” halves, thirds, quarters and beyond.

A fraction is a part of a whole. Half (ยฝ) means one of two equal parts. A quarter (ยผ) is one of four equal parts.

A fraction a/b means a parts when a whole is split into b equal parts. The bottom number (denominator) says how many equal parts; the top (numerator) says how many we have.

A rational number a/b represents the quotient aรทb and a partition of unity into b equal parts, of which a are taken. Equivalent fractions (a/b = ka/kb) arise from scaling numerator and denominator together.
