Place Value: Tens and Ones

Understand that a two-digit number is made of tens and ones.

In the number 23, the 2 means 2 tens (20) and the 3 means 3 ones. So 23 = 20 + 3.

Each digit has a place. The ones place is worth 1 each; the tens place is worth 10 each. 23 is 2 tens and 3 ones.

Base-10 place value assigns each digit a value that is a power of 10 by position. 23 = 2ร—10ยน + 3ร—10โฐ. This positional system generalises to all larger numbers.
